Well well well, who is surprised? Certainly not me. Yes, the States made history, first black president. Grats! But I would like to talk about a subject that hits home a little more.
Of course, being in journalism I follow all elections. So lets do a little comparison.
This year, 2008 Prime Minister election, Canada had the lowest percentage of registered voters ever recorded in Canadian election history. Americans? The voter turn out was 64%, the highest in the last 100 years. (Associated Press.. 2008-11-05)
What's the deal Canada?
Is it because we don't have interesting characters like Sarah Palin, John McCain, Joseph Biden and Barack Obama? Perhaps we need our first coloured Prime Minister?
We get shafted with people like Stephen Harper, Stephane Dion (GONE! Happy liberals?), Jack Layton and Elizabeth May. Actually, take Elizabeth May out of there. I think she's a sweetie.
When we were talking about this in News Writing today the fact came up that we vote for party candidates and not the people themselves. While directly on your ballet in the US it will say Barack Obama and John McCain. Maybe we need to change this, or at least make it a little more apparent that in the end the Prime Minister is the one that gets the say.. or at least from what I understand of it.
Gah.... Canada..... get some more interesting characters.
My small rant.
I'm trying to work on my resume, I am probably going to post it up here when I am done.
Just I have a lot of projects for schoolllll... procrastination.
SJF.
